Rise and shine, North Brooklyn!

We’ve curated a set of three news stories and photos to get you through the short week. Given the holiday on Thursday, we’ve removed midweek happenings from this edition of the newsletter. We promise they’ll be back next week. Have a great Fourth of July!

Series of local moped robberies raises concern

An alarming series of robberies in busy, nightlife centric areas.

What’s going on: In New York City, a recent spate of robberies has alarmed residents, particularly bar-goers in Brooklyn. On June 28, 2024, two individuals on mopeds approached a 32-year-old actor and her 29-year-old friend as they were walking from Twins Lounge to another venue. The assailants, brandishing firearms, demanded the victims' belongings and fled via moped with cell phones, wallets, and other valuables.

Why it’s important: This robbery continues an alarming trend of robberies by moped riders outside or near nightlife spots. While this one doesn’t appear to be connected to prior robberies, moped riding thieves also recently robbed a man outside of Carbone, a tourist in Greenwich Village for his watch, and three diners at Birds of a Feather. Last weekend, a local Greenpoint mother had her necklaces stolen by two individuals on a moped while walking her baby in broad daylight. Whether these are connected events or not, please stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings!

The G train officially shuts down for the Summer

Shedding some more light on how it might affect you.

What’s going on: The G train in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, will shut down for the summer starting at 9:45 p.m. on June 28, lasting until September 3. The shutdown will occur in phases: Court Square to Nassau Avenue (June 28 - July 5), Court Square to Bedford-Nostrand (July 5 - August 12), and Bedford-Nostrand to Church Avenue (August 12 - September 3). Free shuttle buses will replace train services during these periods. Greenpointers wrote an incredibly helpful piece with bus lines and pickup locations.

Why it’s important: This shutdown is crucial for updating the G train's signaling system, which hasn't been modernized in ~100 years. The improvement aims to enhance the train's efficiency and reliability. Let’s hope all the inconvenience this summer is worth it. At least we have the ferry back.

Nick and Son’s Bakery

What’s going on: Nick and Sons has opened a new location at 892 Lorimer Street in Greenpoint, across from McCarren Park. This marks the third location for Nicholas Heavican's bakery, known for its popular croissants and other baked goods.

Why it’s important: The new Greenpoint location offers a variety of “croissants, cardamom buns, fruit tarts”, and will soon include pizzas. Hours will be 7:30am - 2:00pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Does Greenpoint officially have the best bakeries in NYC? We think so.
