The Rockaway Rocket comes to Greenpoint
A more accessible option to Rockaway Beach.

What’s going on: A new ferry route, the Rockaway Rocket, offers direct beach access for residents of Long Island City (LIC) and Greenpoint. Operating on weekends and holidays until August 11, the ferry provides express service to Rockaway Beach. Reservations are required, and the ride costs $10. The ferry departs from LIC, stops at Greenpoint, and takes about an hour and 15 minutes to reach Rockaway. Two departure (9:00am and 12:00pm) and two return times (2:00pm and 5:00pm) will be available.
Why it’s important: This new ferry service provides a convenient and efficient transportation option for LIC and Greenpoint residents to access the beach, particularly for those without cars. The new service will save you a few minutes relative to the subway, while offering you a much more enjoyable experience to the beach.

Restaurant spotlight
A healthy fast-casual staple lands on Manhattan.
Sweetgreen on Manhattan Avenue
What’s going on: Sweetgreen is opening a new location in Greenpoint, taking over the former Disco Ball Rite Aid space at 723-725 Manhattan Avenue. Signage has appeared, and locals can text a number for updates on the opening date. This will be Sweetgreen’s second location in the area, with another in Williamsburg.
Why it’s important: Sweetgreen coming to Greenpoint is polarizing. Some believe the neighborhood desperately needed an accessible, healthy, fast-casual restaurant. Others worry about the evolving commercial landscape of the neighborhood that is likely to displace some of the small businesses that make Greenpoint so unique. Whatever your opinion, it’s great to see an empty retail space on Manhattan find a new tenant.
