Rise and shine, North Brooklyn!

We’ve curated a set of three news stories, some interesting events, and photos we love to help get you through the week.

As always, readable in under 5 minutes.

The Greenpoint building boom continues

The Dupont will add to the row of high-rise buildings lining the Greenpoint waterfront.

What’s going on: A new rendering has been revealed for The Dupont, a 41-story residential tower at 16 Dupont Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, which is part of the larger 22-acre Greenpoint Landing master plan. Designed by GKV Architects and developed by Rockefeller Group and Park Tower Group, the building will stand 400 feet tall and feature 381 rental units. Units will be available by September ‘24.

Why it’s important: The Dupont will continue the trend of new housing unit creation on the Greenpoint waterfront. The neighborhood is at the top of the charts of many Net New Housing unit graphs and will continue to see significant development over the next few years.

Busy Bedford corner becomes a pedestrian zone

The Bedford avenue intersection with Nassau will be car-free until the G-train resumes full service.

What’s going on: The northernmost block of Bedford Avenue in Greenpoint has been converted into a full-time pedestrian plaza, named "Bedford Slip," until at least August 12, 2024. This change is to ease congestion for shuttle buses during the G train shutdown as the MTA replaces the train’s signaling system. The plaza will feature planters and spaces for public use, with the goal of reducing unnecessary traffic and improving bus service efficiency.

Why it’s important: Transforming Bedford Avenue into a pedestrian plaza helps mitigate the impact of the G train shutdown by reducing traffic and improving shuttle bus operations. The success of this temporary closure could influence permanent pedestrianization efforts, benefiting both residents and businesses by attracting more foot traffic and fostering a more vibrant neighborhood atmosphere. More than 2,000 people have signed a petition to make “Bedford Slip” a permanent pedestrian zone, despite the DOT’s initial refusal.

Restaurant spotlight

A Gramercy staple opens in Greenpoint.

Caffè Panna

What’s going on: Caffè Panna, an Italian-inspired ice cream and coffee shop originally located in Gramercy, Manhattan, is opening its second location in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at 16 Norman Avenue. Founded by Hallie Meyer, daughter of famed restaurateur Danny Meyer, Caffè Panna is known for its unique flavors and high-quality ingredients, often sourced from local markets. Set to open on Thursday, July 11 at 1:30pm, the Greenpoint location will feature a 4,700-square-foot space that includes ice cream production facilities and will offer a range of products, including classic flavors, sundaes, and constantly changing scoops and pints inspired by the team’s creativity.

Why it’s important: Greenpoint continues to solidify its place as a culinary destination amongst NYC neighborhoods. The Gramercy location often has insane lines (sometimes 40 minutes), and we’re hopping the bigger Greenpoint spot will make getting some premium ice cream a bit easier.
