Local artist pays $1 per month for rent

Quite a deal.

What’s going on: Victor Jeffreys II, a long-time resident and artist in Greenpoint, has been granted the unique opportunity to utilize a former Santander bank location as his art studio for the incredibly nominal rent of $1 per month. His landlord offered him the space with minimal conditions, hoping to bring new life to the otherwise vacant property. Jeffreys, now living in the “bank” for 2 months, has opened it to the community in partnership with Element Brooklyn.

Why it’s important: When asked about what the studio represents by Greenpointers reporter Billy McEntee, Jeffreys responded that his exhibit shows that “there are glimmers of hope” in a chaotic world. He’s tremendously thankful for the opportunity given to him by his landlord and the Greenpoint community, who have donated supplies and necessities to aid his efforts.

A bill to protect community services

The importance of considering community impact in business.

What’s going on: A new bill introduced by Assembly Member Emily Gallagher aims to amend the process surrounding the sale of religious properties in New York. This legislation comes in response to the closure and sale of the Park Church Co-Op in Greenpoint, which had served as a community hub offering various social and educational programs such as “music classes, after-school programs, concerts, a soup kitchen, and a drop-in shelter”. The bill seeks to ensure that community services can continue even after such properties are sold.

Why it’s important: The bill serves to protect spaces that serve as critical social and support hubs, especially in urban areas like Greenpoint where spaces like these are rapidly diminishing. By requiring that the impact on the community be considered in property sales, the bill aims to protect these "third spaces" that foster community bonds and provide essential services, and ultimately protect the social fabric of neighborhoods amidst ongoing development pressures.

Restaurant spotlight

A Scandinavian café comes to Greenpoint.

Falu house

What’s going on: Falu House, a Scandinavian Deli and CafĂ©, will be coming to Greenpoint in July, 2024! Located at 34 Norman Avenue, the quick-service restaurant will offer coffee, pastries, sandwiches, small plates, beer, and wine, all done with traditional Scandinavian recipes and ingredients. A small retail section with pantry staples will also be available.

Why it’s important: Known for their emphasis on simplicity, quality ingredients, and a cozy atmosphere—a concept known as "hygge"—Scandinavian cafĂ©s offer a unique and differentiated experience from traditional NYC cafĂ©s. Like a classic “kaffe haus” in the Nordics, Falu House will bring Scandinavian coziness and cuisine to the community in a nature-forward space for friends to meet and enjoy a “fika”. The cafĂ© is also focused on using the sustainability values and innovations of the Nordic region to create a business that operates with minimal environmental impact. Falu House will certainly be a neighborhood gem.
